Description
The Lambda Sensor, also known as an Oxygen or O2 sensor, gives a voltage feedback to the ECU indicating the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, thus allowing accurate control over the combustion mixture. This is important to minimise emissions, maximise fuel economy and ensure the longevity of the catalytic converter.

On a standard Elise exhaust, it is located on the manifold downpipe, somewhat resembling a spark plug in appearance, screwed into a threaded hole facing the front of the engine. It will (usually) have 4 silicone sheathed wires emerging from it, and may also have an outer heat resistant wrap covering the wires until they have run some distance from the exhaust.

The wires are usually colour coded as follows:

*White (x2) - Terminals 3&4 - heater wires. Voltage is supplied via these from the ECU to pre-heat the sensor to its operating temperature when the engine is warming up. Polarity is not important.
*Grey - Terminal 2 - sensor ground (earth)
*Black - Terminal 1 - sensor signal (+ve)

Correct Operation
A correctly operating sensor acts as a fuel cell once heated to a minimum of 300°C, producing a voltage by electromechanical means, which typically ranges from around 0.2 volts in the case of a lean mixture to 0.8 volts for a rich mixture. The optimum mixture ratio is reached at around 0.45 volts.

Sensor Testing
*Disconnect the sensor from the ECU at the square, black plastic connector, so that the sensor's voltage may be measured in isolation.
*Attach an electronic voltmeter or oscilloscope (adjusted to a 1.0 volt range) across the black and grey wires attached to the lambda sensor. This can be done in a number of ways; paring back the insulation from the wires, attaching sprung probes directly to the pins in the connector, pushing pins or IDC splicing blocks through the insulation on the wires, etc. DO NOT use a moving coil meter to test the sensor, as the meter's low internal resistance will almost certainly damage it.
*Start the engine and allow it to warm up for several minutes. As the heater wire has been disconnected from the ECU, it will take longer than normal for it to reach its 300°C minimum operating temperature.
*Examine the voltage output from the sensor. It should be greater than 0.2 volts. No voltage, or a very tiny voltage - far below 0.2 volts, most likely indicates a faulty sensor.
*Rev the engine and examine the change in voltage at the sensor. There should be practically no time delay between the engine being revved and a change in voltage at the sensor. A long delay may also indicate a faulty sensor.

Replacing the Sensor
This is commonly considered to be a complete pain, primarily due to the sensor's tendency to 'weld' itself into the screw fitting in the exhaust manifold, making it very difficult to remove. Access is also extremely tight, and it is likely that there will not be sufficient room to faclitate using a specialist oxygen sensor socket.

One suggested solution is to cut the wires to the sensor, allowing a 22mm ring spanner to be used to attempt to remove it.

It is said that Lotus garages have their own special ways and means of removing these sensors, and this can involve removing the exhaust manifold entirely, especially where removing the sensor has led to the sensor mounting thread being stripped and having to be re-cut or helicoiled.

Spare Parts
*Elise S1
**Lotus: A111E6059S
**Bosch: 0 258 003 229
**Rover: MHK 10006

*Elise S2
**Lotus: A117E6007F
**Bosch: 0 258 006 127
**Rover: MHK 100840
**Same sensor type used on location in front and behind of cat-converter

Prices range from around £50 for an after market part without the connector attached to £70 for one with a connector to £150+ for a Lotus branded unit from a main dealer.

Do not be tempted to use a (cheaper) S1 sensor on an S2 and splicing the wires. The S2 ECU will turn on the MIL because the heater element resistance value is different between the two sensor types and the S1 sensor falls outside the allowable range for the S2 ECU.

*Honda engine FRONT sensor for European K20A2 engine (narrowband)
**Honda 36531-PRA-G01
**DENSO 192 400-1090
**NTK OHK563-H5

*Honda engine REAR sensor (not fitted/used on most Elise conversions!)
**Honda 36532-PRC-004
**NTK OZA562-H7

Wiring
For Sinclaire's/Essex Autosport Honda conversion the wirings should be connected as follows:
*Terminal 1 (Lambda Black) - orange
*Terminal 2 (Lambda Grey) - purple / white
*Terminal 3 (Lambda White) - red / yellow
*Terminal 4 (Lambda White) - black white

The coloured wiring on Link Up and other conversions will be dependent on the converter. However they will be connected:
*2x white = heater wires ( to ECU A1 and +12V)
*1x black = sensor/signal ground (to ECU E4)
*1x grey = sensor/signal voltage (to ECU A6)

Oil filters for Honda conversions
Honda converted cars require special attention to the type of filter that is used bacuse of space constraints.

In the case of conversions that use the OEM filter location (eg. Link-Up) you need to use a filter with a small outer diameter to fit it between the subrame and the engine.

For this puspose you can use the short and narrow OEM Honda filters (65mm long):

* Honda 15400-PFB-004
* Honda 15400-PFB-014

Or if these are not available you can also use:

* Renault 82 00 033 408
* MANN  W 67/1
* HAMP (Honda After Market Parts) H1540-PFB-515
* WL7254 WIX OIL FILTER (PH5796)(Z1277)
* Lautrette MECAFILTER ELH4300

Which are also the same size.

A possible option depending on the amount of space that's available would also be:

*MANN W 67 (85mm long)
*MANN W 610/3 (90mm long)

BUT MAKE SURE THESE FIT BEFOREHAND!

All filters above ar of a narrow (approx. 65-70mm) type.

The OEM Civic TypeR filters listed are:

* Honda   15400-PLC-004
* Honda   15400-PLM-A01

With the last one being more 'fat' and only being suitable for use in a converted Elise if the conversion has a remote oil filter mount.

Optionally in that case you can also use a similarly sized:

* MANN    W 814/80

Sinclaires/Essex Autosport use the filter below on their remote filter mount.

* CROSLAND 672
Elise S1
Single piece, light alloy roadwheels, in various styles, were fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres, engineered to
provide the optimum balance of ride and handling characteristics. Pirelli P Zero are the recommended tyres for use on the vehicle under normal road conditions.

Note that the tyre tread pattern is asymmetric with the tyre sidewalls marked ‘Inner’ and ‘Outer’; check that replacement tyres are correctly fitted.
Part of the tread pattern is also directional in appearance, but the direction of rotation has no bearing on the tyre performance.

Pirelli have ceased manufacture of the P Zero (Nov 2007) and Group Lotus now recommend the Yokohama C-Drive. Note that the only way to mix tyres is with a pair of P Zeros on the front and a pair of C-Drives on the back. Details are on the Lotus web site at http://www.grouplotus.com/media/car/doc/Wheels%20&%20Tyres_Website.pdf

In order to give S1 Elise owners an alternative tyre choice with an emphasis on track performance,
Yokohama and Lotus jointly developed the Advan Neova tyre.
This construction, which is not generallyavailable in Europe, features an assymetric directional tread pattern with special attention having been
paid during development to provide improvements in vehicle balance, wet grip and comfort without sacrificing general agility.
Sizes are 195/50x15 front, and 225/45x16 rear, to fit standard Elise roadwheels.

Tyres may be ordered through Lotus dealers and should be fitted in complete vehicle sets.
Note that the increased width of the front tyre (standard = 185/55 R15) requires that an extension lip be applied around the front wheelarch to provide the necessary tyre coverage - see your dealer.
Since these tyres have not been homologated in all territories, customers should check the legality of these tyres with the appropriate authorities in their country of residence.

Various wheel types have been used.
The first cars were fitted with wheels having 5 split-spokes made by AWI, which wheels are now no longer available.
These wheels were replaced in April ’99 by a 12 spoke design made by Rimstock,
whilst the 111S model featured a 6 spoke design by O.Z. with ½” wider (7.5J) rear rims. The Sport 160 used wider ‘Victory’ wheels with 6J and 8J rims.

were fitted with beither 10 spoke magnesium wheels by Tecnomagesio, or 10 spoke alloy wheels by Rimstock, but both wheel types required 6mm longer wheel studs.
Track biased Yokohama A038-R tyres were used.

S1 Exige
used Rimstock 12 spoke wheels larger in diameter and width than the Elise, and fitted with Lotus specification Yokohama A039 tyres.
These Exige wheels use 60 degree taper wheelnuts as opposed to the spherical seat nuts used on other Elise variants.

Tyre Pressure(When Cold): Front 1,6Bar Rear 1,8Bar

S2 Elise
Lotus engineers have worked with the tyre manufacturer Bridgestone, to produce a version of the
‘Potenza’ tyre specifically for the ‘Mk.2’ Elise, to optimise performance on both road and track.
This tyre is identified by the construction code element of the DOT code moulded on one of the tyre sidewalls, and it
is most important that ONLY this version is fitted if the correct handling characteristics are to be maintained.
The rear tyre is NOT the same as fitted to Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220.

Lotus front tyre code; CFE.

Lotus rear tyre code; DCK.

Yoko AD 07's v Bridgestone RE040

The S2 Elise uses different hubs to S1, with roadwheels having a larger diameter and PCD, such
that there is no interchangeability between models. Rimstock wheels with both 6 and 8 spoke designs have been used, both of which are retained with four conical wheelbolts.
Some 8 spoke wheels are
finished in ‘high power silver’ which can be very difficult to shade match.

Tyre Pressure(When cold): Front 1,8Bar (26 psi) Rear 2,0Bar (29 psi)

Sport 135 and Lotus Sport 111 versions
use Yokohama A048 tyres mounted on 16 spoke O.Z. roadwheels in conjunction with sports suspension.
The wider front tyre (195/50) is fitted on a wider front wheel rim. Lotus approves of this tyre fitment only as part of the complete Sport 135R/111 package.
The tyres should not be fitted on standard specification wheels, or with standard suspension.

Elise 111R/Exige S2/USA Elise
The 111R originally used the same Bridgestone Potenza RE040 tyres as ‘Mk.2’ Elise, but re-classified to ‘W’
speed rating. However following the release of the Federal (USA) Elise UK cars are now fitted with the Yokohama Neova AD07 tyres.

The S2 Exige uses the Yokohama A048 tyres as used on Sport 135R/111.

USA Elise are fitted with specially developed Yokohama Neova AD07 tyres.

Standard Elise roadwheels are the same style and rim diameters as on ‘Mk.2’ cars, but the rear wheels
have a greater inset to accommodate the repositioned suspension pick up points, and the front wheels
have been re-classified to a higher load rating.

Exige models use a unique 8 twin spoke design, with a wider front rim (6.5J compared with 6J for the Elise) for the A048 tyres. The Yokohama AD07 tyres (175mm width) are not recommended for the Exige wheels. A number of SELOC members have written to Lotus Cars to request the AD07 be made available in a 195mm width to provide a more road biased option than the AO48.

Fitting wheel and tyre configurations not tested or approved by Lotus can result in chassis or body foul,
adversely affecting handling or braking, wheel security or other dangerous conditions and should not be attempted without expert advice.
What do the Treadwear, Traction and Temperature markings mean?
These makings are to satisfy the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Uniform Tire Quality Grade Standards (UTQG). Only passenger car tyres sold in the U.S.A. market are required to have UTQG markings.

Treadwear

The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test track. A tire graded 200 would wear twice as long on the government test course under specified test conditions as one graded 100.

Treadwear should not be used in comparison between different tyre manufactures because each manufacturer may use a different base figure.

Traction

Traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C. They represent the tire's ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete.

Temperature

This rating grades a tyres ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. The temperature grades from highest to lowest, are A, B and C. These represent the tire's resistance to the generation of heat.
Unfortunately tyres are a matter of opinion, subjective at that, and suitability for the user. However you have to bear in mind that you cannot readily "try before you buy" so this section has been added to give the heads up on tyre choice. Please note they are only for guidance and other opinions and tyres are available ! Your feedback will be appreciated.
Decent grip in all conditions and suit the steering and balance of the car. The skinny fronts make braking on the limit tricky
Very soft sidewalls, that improve the ride but remove most of the directness and the steering feel from the Elise. Quite decent on wet and dry grip, with better braking than the skinny 175 Bridgestones.
Destroyed the ride to the point of often feeling sick over undulating surfaces. Very soft sidewalls rob a bit of steering feel and initial turn in. Well balanced front to back running 24psi /26psi. Acceptable dry grip but real gain is in the wet and cold coming over from A048’s. Bargain price makes them a good winter/commute choice – esp if you have a 2nd set of rims for spirited driving.
Unbelievable dry grip on smooth tarmac but the flip side being the price especially when they only come with 6mm of tread from new. Not too bad in damp conditions but focused tread pattern means they are often overwhelmed through standing water. Need warming through well before offering peak performance but I found rear griped hard and use of throttle can wash out the front though improved by running 23psi in the front. Fantastic for track and low mileage summer users but expensive to run daily and scary in the winter.
Also see Traveling abroad

Before you go
Consider getting european breakdown cover
Your insurance will almost certainly cover you for Europe, but will probably be just third party, so consider paying for Fully Comp Euro cover.

Also worth checking your insurance covers you for the repatriation of your car in the event you vehicle ends up un-driveable following an accident. It may only stipulate that you are covered for transport to the nearest competent repairer. Repatration costs can easily be over £1000 depending on where you are. If your insurance doesn't cover for this you can get aftermarket coverage. Your standard AA or RAC European cover may also not suffice in the event of an accident.

Things to pack
Warning triangle

Hi-vis jackets for all occupants. These must be accessible from inside the car, so don't put them in your elise's boot.

Replacement bulb kit

Sat nav

Driving License, V5, insurance docs

Euros for those 'on the spot' speeding fines.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

Getting There
Speedferries or Eurotunnel are frequently used by SELOC members.
Norfolklines offer a very good service (and cheap) to Dunkirk, which is only 25 minutes further up the coast form Calais. Far more reliable than Speedferries.

Don't forget that you can use your Tesco's vouchers on the Eurotunnel.

Driving in France
Drive on the right

Roadsigns: Blue = Motorway (Peage / Toll), Green = Main Roads (N), White = local roads

Plan your route (including peage toll costs) at http://www.viamichelin.com/

Beware of possible French driving like idiots on their local roads (even on blind corners)

French are eager to overtake too & usually in a hurry it seems.

Main Roads (N) usually have lots of trucks on them during weekdays. Frequent dual carriage ways though :up

If oncoming French traffic flashes their lights at you they either like your car OR warn you of speedtrap ahead.

Avoid Rouen

Places / roads to go
The coast road south of Calais
If you're in the Loire go and visit Ambroise, its a very beautiful small town with Da Vinci's resting place.
Azay le Rideau is a lovely chateau built in the middle of a river worth going to see not far from Tours.

Other hints and tips
Remember that you'll struggle to find garages that are open off the piege's (tolls) on Sunday's or late at night.
24/24 stations in most towns accept British credit cards these days.

French people appreciate your attempts at speaking French by being generally friendly, polite and helpful people.
So give it a go. Outside of bigger towns not many French speak English, or only a little. Perhaps bring small dictionary just in case.

Look at sawdays.co.uk for places to stay.

Check Oil and take a spare litre or two.

Dont get caught speeding.......it WILL be expensive!....and if you are way over the limit - you could loose your car / licence!

If you have time before you go try and get a Telepeage beeper. I think www.sanef.fr is the website for them and it's a total godsend driving in an Elise, especially if you don't have a passenger to deal with the toll booths for you.

Do not get caught with a camera scanner - big fines and confiscation!!

GPS Based Navigation equipment such as Tom Tom, however, are 100% legal. A free Scamera database for France can be downloaded from the Alerte GPS site
It is also highly recommended that you carry your driving license and proof of insurance documents with you.

Don't forget to extend your breakdown Cover, this can be arranged for just the time of the trip for a small amount.
